![]() Tyler ShervenBuffalo ReUse Volunteer of the Month - August 2010August was a great month for youth volunteers! We would like to thank all the groups, clubs, schools and individuals that came to volunteer this summer. Our youth volunteers are heading back to school and it is time to honor a very special teen who was committed to Buffalo ReUSE all summer long – Tyler Sherven!! Tyler’s dad, Jeff, is a longtime friend and volunteer of Buffalo ReUSE. We were ecstatic when Jeff inquired about bringing Tyler to volunteer over the summer. Tyler’s parents had talked to him about how he was going to spend his summer time outside of band camp, hockey, his chores and family vacation. Since it is hard to find a job at 14, they thought it would be a good idea to gain some work experience and encouraged Tyler to consider volunteering. Tyler knew he wanted to do some sort of physical work and he had visited Buffalo ReUse a few times with his parents, so it was an easy decision to get involved with the ReUse team. It wasn’t long before Tyler told his mom he liked what he was doing at Buffalo ReUse. Deb BirkBuffalo ReUse Volunteer of the Month - July 2010This month we would like to honor Deb as volunteer of the month. Her behind-the-scenes work in the Buffalo ReUSE accounting office has been integral to our success this yearshe’s called Niagara Falls home for the past 20 years. She is a Buffa-lover at heart – she enjoys the vast park system, proximity to water, and the plethora of locally-owned restaurants Buffalo has to offer. She also loves that the Erie-Niagara Region has so many colleges and libraries that provide educational opportunities to a diverse population. In her free time, Deb likes to rock away in her favorite chair with a good book. She also attends spirituality classes at her local church. Deb is an animal lover – although giraffes are her favorite, she adores all the surrogate pets available for snuggling at the Buffalo ReUSE office. Deb is also a true bargain hunter – which isn’t too removed from her passion for good accounting practices! Deb is an uber-prepared and organized volunteer. She swiftly researched our financial software, learned how it worked, and got crackin’ at our books. Deb has taken our record keeping from shoe-boxed to standardized in a flash. She has made us audit ready for 2009 and got us on track for 2010. She continually suggests ways to improve efficiency and accuracy – making it easier to produce reports to the powers that be. Without her we would only have a checkbook with categories. Now we are legit! Thank you Deb for helping us move forward in the Buffalo ReUSE office!
City Honors SeniorsBuffalo ReUse Volunteers of the Month - June 2010Buffalo ReUse wants to CONGRATULATE the City Honors Interns Class of 2010 for all their hard work, both at school and with us. Our City Honors Interns Class of 2010 are: George Braun ![]() George ApfelBuffalo ReUse Volunteer of the Month - May 2010George Apfel is an expatriate Buffalonian who has supported Buffalo ReUse from his home in faraway Las Vegas. George is a radio engineer and computer expert. He’s our semi-official database administrator, helping us keep track of our various lists of people. He’s also made a few radio spots for us (Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!) and advised us on radio and advertising matters. George is coming home! As he says on his facebook page: “Buffalo 1953–1963, Las Vegas 1963–2010, Buffalo May 21, 2010. After 47 years in the desert a Buffalo kid comes home.” We’ll be happy to have him closer to hand and will put him to work, you can count on that!
![]() Nanh BuiBuffalo ReUse Volunteer of the Month - April 2010Nanh’s been helping us out in all kinds of ways for quite a while now. We’re always happy to see her cheerful face at Buffalo ReUse. She’s a Senior at Cheektowaga Central and interested in Architecture as a career. She just “showed up one day” and hung out with us a lot getting dirty all last summer and trying all kinds of new tasks like refinishing our staircase, building rain barrels, helping with the compost and harvesting in the gardens. She’s been trying to promote more teen volunteering too - see this Buffalo News story.
![]() John NowakBuffalo ReUse Volunteer of the Month - March 2010John is a retired Erie County Librarian and the hardworking owner of a large Queen Anne Victorian in Buffalo’s Central Park neighborhood. He comes by the ReSource once or twice a week and puts to work his librarian skills (organizing, sorting) and carpentry skills (building, demolishing). He’s also a fount of knowledge about old houses and how to restore them and keep them happy. John’s an unassuming fellow who enjoys helping us out and we deeply appreciate his great contribution!
![]() Ann WittmeyerBuffalo ReUse Volunteer of the Month - February 2010Ann has been a Super Volunteer since the beginning! From participating in many special events to supervising groups of volunteers on big volunteer days, Ann has continually shown her support and dedicated her time to Buffalo ReUse. Just this past summer Ann roadtripped with us to Dayton to represent Buffalo at the Ten Living Cities Conference. When we needed someone to adopt our office cat for the winter, Ann stepped up and has taken great care of Sage. We can always depend on her to provide cookies, desserts, and other delicious food for volunteer events. Ann has Regifted, exchanged holiday cookies, planted trees, tabled at festivals and fairs, helped with deconstructions, gardened, pulled knotweed, and done just about anything we ask of her, and for that, we are eternally grateful. So thanks, Ann!!! |
