Medaille Leadership Discussion Next Wednesday March 30

MedailleNext Wednesday, March 30, at 6pm, Buffalo ReUse will be part of a discussion at Medaille College about “Leadership in WNY”.

Some points of discussion:

  • What goals for community improvement do you and your organization(s) work to achieve? How do these help contribute to building a civic and sustainable future for Buffalo and the region?
  • Why do you work toward these goals? What is it about Buffalo’s history that makes these goals important? What is it about Buffalo’s history that makes these goals achievable?
  • What perceptions of (or stories about) Buffalo and the region can sometimes be obstacles or barriers to reaching these goals?
  • What opportunities and conditions exist to help you and your organization(s) realize these goals?
  • Why should students learn to “read” and “engage” in writing the story of their community? What can they do to contribute to the long, hard work of building civic and sustainable communities? In what ways is personal success only meaningful in the context of community?
  • What are the personal challenges and rewards of actively engaging in your community and working to make it a better place?

From our friends at the Central Terminal:

Central Terminal Restoration Corporation to Release Master Plan Outline for Preservation, Restoration and Reuse of Art Deco Landmark

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The master plan for the preservation, restoration and rehabilitation of Buffalo Central Terminal will be released to the general public and primary stakeholders at 2pm, Thursday, March 10, 2011. The comprehensive plan was prepared by the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation's Architectural Advisory Committee. It will outline various infrastructure needs and development opportunities with the goal of returning Buffalo Central Terminal to its full architectural integrity and regional significance.

"The Buffalo Central Terminal stands in defiance of time to form a tangible link to our past and a gateway to our future," explains Paul Lang, Chairman of the CTRC's Architectural Advisory Committee.

At that time, a downloadable copy of the document will be available on the Terminal's website BuffaloCentralTerminal.org.The cost to complete all phases of this multi part plan is estimated at $75 million. A mix of private, public and foundation monies are being sought to complete the project. The amount of initial funding requested will be dependent upon which elements of the plan will be embarked upon within the next 14-months.

The Central Terminal Restoration Corporation was founded in 1997 to oversee the stabilization and restoration of the New York Central Terminal in Buffalo, New York. The Terminal complex includes an 18-acre site that hosts an art deco office tower, passenger concourse and four-story baggage building. The mission of the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation is to ensure that the original grandeur of the Terminal is available to current and future generations.

The People's National Fuel Stakeholder Meeting

THURSDAY, MARCH 10TH @ 4PM

St. Paul's and St. Mark's UCC (Niagara and W. Huron)

National Fuel executive are on their way to Florida, where they will be making a plan to increase their profits while we are left out in the cold. But tomorrow the community will have a voice too! We'll be passing our own resolutions and delivering them to National Fuel!

Spread the word far and wide: Buffalo is tired of big corporations like National Fuel taking resources out of our communities and leaving families to make tough choices just to stay warm.  Why is National Fuel CEO David Smith making $3,500 an hour while WNY families struggle to pay their bills? National Fuel needs to partner with this community because we have the solutions and we deserve better!

We'll be meeting on Niagara St then marching up to National Fuel to send a strong message that we can't afford to be left out in the cold any longer. When we show up in big numbers, people listen! We need you!

The People's National Fuel Stakeholder Meeting
Thursday, March 10th – 4pm
St. Paul's and St. Mark's UCC (corner of Niagara and W. Huron)

See you all tomorrow,
Your Friends at PUSH

Big Fat Bike Ride Today! Show Your Support for Buffalo Arts and Culturals!

Big Fat Bike Ride Today! Show Your Support for Buffalo Arts and Culturals!

Big Fat Bike Ride is TODAY! Represent Buffalo's Bicycle Community and Show Your Support for Our Arts & Culturals!

Call to All Bicyclists! Show your support of the great cultural arts of Buffalo by leading this year’s Mardi Gras parade to benefit over 40 organizations de-funded by Erie County. Mark your calendars. This is our time to show the strength of Buffalo’s bicycle community and show our support for the very things that make our city a great place to live and bicycle.

Meet at 4:30 pm, TODAY, Tuesday, March 8th, outside the Albright Knox.

THE GIVE FOR GREATNESS CAMPAIGN

Artvoice in conjunction with M&T Bank has created the Give For Greatness campaign in response to the recent withdrawal of all county funding to over forty cultural arts organizations. Every single theater company, dance company, small arts group and literary organization has been cut from the county budget. The title “Give For Greatness” reflects our belief that art, music, literature, dance and so on, are the qualities that make a community great. Unlike our county executive we also believe that even small groups who engage in these activities are valuable and whether or not they draw tourists is not how they should be measured.

The Give For Greatness, or G4G, campaign will run from March 5th to May 5th and will include a series of events, fundraisers and a website for making donations at www.giveforgreatness.org a tax deductible charitable donations account opened at M&T specifically for this cause. (the web page is still a few days away from completion).

One of our first events will be the 16th annual Artvoice Mardi Gras float parade and the subsequent Mardis Gras parties at more than forty venues. This has always been a fundraiser and this year it will be directed for G4G. It is more important than ever to make it a large celebration. Just as important as the dollars raised, is reflecting the sense of community we have here among both our creative people and all the patrons of the arts, as well.

Here is a list of de-funded cultural arts, which G4G is working to support:

THEATRE:

Shakespeare in the Park – Irish Classical Theatre Company – Musical Fare Theatre – Kavinoky Theatre – Buffalo United Artists Theatre – Theatre of Youth – Lancaster Opera House – Road Less Traveled Theatre – Ujima Theatre Company – Alleyway Theatre – Paul Robeson Theatre – Torn Space Theatre – New Phoenix Theatre – Alt Theatre – Subversive Theatre Collective – Jewish Repertory Theater

DANCE:

Configuration Dance Company – Lehrer Dance Company – Buffalo Inner City Ballet – Neglia Ballet – Folkloric Dance

 ART:

Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center – CEPA Gallery – Big Orbit Gallery – El Museo Gallery – Springville Center for the Arts – Locust St. Neighborhood Art Classes – Squeaky Wheel – WNY Artists Group – Buffalo Arts Studio – Polish Arts Club of Buffalo – Roycroft Campus

 EDUCATION AND MUSIC:
