From the Kenmore Village Improvement Society:
The Kenmore Village Improvement Society (KVIS) and the residents of the Village of Kenmore and the surrounding area wish to thank you for helping us recycle this year. Having the ReUse truck come to Kenmore for collections once a month from May – October, not only helped us keep many items from going to the Niagara Falls landfill, it also gave us a chance to become more aware of how. much we throw away that can be given away. Thank you for helping us become a more enlightened and greener community.
We publicized the pick-ups quite a bit and received over one hundred calls about ReUse. We would refer folks to your online pdf of what items you accept, and would provide your phone number to those without internet access. We hope that you think the collections were worth while and we’d like to invite you back for Kenmore collections in 2011. We believe that the amount of items collected will grow next year as more and more people learn of the initiative.
We’re very grateful to Kenmore for suggesting this pickup series and we got a lot of good material from Kenmore residents. Thanks,Kenmore!
A neighborhood ensemble invites you to attend a performance honoring women
veterans. Marisa Robinson, of Riley Street, and the SIBYLS THEATRICAL ENSEMBLE are devoted to the representation of women in a positive light. This year we would like to invite you, your family and friends to our production of WHITE, PINK AND BLUE: A HISTORICAL LOOK AT WOMEN’S ROLES IN AMERICA’S MILITARY. This production will be honoring women’s roles by using historical documents and personal experiences. The production is a form of vignettes demonstrating the allegiance; personal determination and expressing the courage and forthrightness demonstrated by these individuals. This production gives an overview of women’s place in the fight for freedom, equality and justice to be called true American Heroes.

A rare picture of Bill’s front side (had to sneak up on him and capture him near a mirror).
Bill made this table, suitable for a bedroom or a large front hall, from Buffalo ReUsed Materials. He and Tracy brought it over to the ReSource the other day, where it’s on sale (all proceeds benefit our community programs) for $200.
Come on by and check it out!

We have some really neat old freight wagons and carts at the ReSource. These were a generous donation from McCullagh Coffee. They used them for years to haul their heavy bags of coffee around their warehouse.
Three of them are wagons, like a Red Rider, but bigger:
The others have upright handles, some at each end, some just at one end:
Several of our artist friends are exhibiting at the huge BEYOND | IN WNY 2010 art extravaganza this weekend:
Dennis Maher – lover of all things deconstructed, and we don’t mean words and sentences and paragraphs . . .
Carl Lee – our favorite filmmaker; his exhibited work will be familiar to demolition fans . . .
JM Reed – photographer, real estate broker and supporter/advisor of Buffalo housing activists such as ourselves . . .
All three are exhibiting at the Burchfield-Penney Art Center at Buffalo State College. Opening reception is this Sunday, 2pm to 4pm.

From our friend Megan McNally:
Hello!
As many of you know, I will be heading out of Buffalo mid July on a journey around the US. My first obligation is to be out in Taos, New Mexico in August to learn about building earthships, totally sustainable structures that are off the grid and built from used materials (tires, glass bottles, etc)! Eventually I will find myself in Vermont in October interning for Yestermorrow Design and Build School for 6 months, a school that teaches anything from drafting to timberframing to welding to straw bale building. Along the way I am stopping in targeted cities to interview awesome people, businesses and organizations, learning about cool ideas being implemented in this giant country (can you imagine my future gas bills??? Eek!).
In any event, I am writing to invite you to my blog that I am starting. It is titled “Stops Along the Way: Buffalo and Back Again.” Realistically, I don’t know how long it will take me to get back to Buffalo…maybe years, or maybe only 8 months, but I thought it fairly apt. I want to share with you the people I meet who GET IT and offer up some cool ideas that I think are worthwhile to mention. Don’t worry, for those of you not interested in this type of stuff, I’m sure there will be plenty of silly anecdotes about me getting lost or doing something totally crazy that will really make you laugh.
The address for the blog is followingthetide.blogspot.com…because that’s what I’m gonna try to do. I have generic plans because I want to have the ability to change plans at the last minute. To stay an extra day somewhere, to leave early, to get SO lost that I discover something insanely amazing.
Hope you’ll follow me on my journey! If you’d like a postcard at some point, please forward your address.
Love,
Megan
