SEE some of the TREASURES!

Ladies & Gentlemen,
Buffalo ReUse invites you to our first-ever live auction!  Join us Saturday, September 25th from 8-10pm as folks bid on treasures from our inventory and talents of our staff and volunteers!

You could win a french toast breakfast in bed, a photographer for you Gramma’s 100th birthday party, a night with Olaf, a potpurri of pickles, a massage, a reprieve from laundry, a cat-sitter, a week of dog walking, a chance to entertain guests with cherries jubilee, wine making lessons, soap making lessons, coffee roasting fresh before your eyes, free car washes from BARB, installation of that rain barrel you bought 2months ago and more!

There’s already over a dozen treasures we’ve set aside.  You could win a kooky attic find like a Wyoming license plate from 1937, antiques, a piece of local history and some architectural gems!  Click on the flyer to see more.  We’ll be sharing details and stories for each piece.
Let’s start with Lot#213…
This case of antique, painted label “Oscar’s Beverages” Pop Bottles.
Brewed and bottled in downtown Buffalo – this is a case of antique, painted label, Oscar’s Beverages bottles, many with their flavor caps (Cola, Gingerale, Grapefruit) and in a matching wooden case. These were retrieved from an attic during salvage operations. Oscar Beverages was founded by Oscar Greenberg, a Russian immigrant who came to Buffalo in 1911. He founded Oscar’s beverages in the late 1920s. These bottles seem to date from the 1930’s or 1940’s. What’s really special is that the frugal person who stored these away so long ago had no idea they were preserving Buffalo history.

Recycle your Gadgets for CASHola

You may already know gazelle.com I promise, it’s not the guy with the orange tan and ponytail.
It’s a site that will take some specific types of electronic gear–ipods, iphones, laptops, computers, external hard drives, even movies and they give you cash. Get paid for being a responsible consumer?! That’s amazing!
You can also donate part of your refund to charity–be responsible and generous with their Gazelle for Good program!  If your job or office is upgrading their company issued technology–maybe this is a way they can give back.
Search the site for charities that interest you OR allow me to suggest one! Buffalo’s Tool Library would love to benefit from your electronics cleanouts!  Checkout the gadget drive that we created for funding our Community Programs http://buffaloreuse.gazelle.com

Help El Buen Amigo/LACA help Chile!

On February 27, 2010 there was a devastating earthquake in Chile’s central region, affecting an area stretching over 900 miles. The 8.8 earthquake and subsequent tsunamis destroyed many cities and towns, killing more than 400 people.

The Latin American Cultural Association (LACA) and El Buen Amigo are hosting a fundraising musical event and pot luck on SUNDAY APRIL 25th at the University Presbyterian Church (corner of Main St. & Niagara Falls Blvd. ) to raise money to send to the victims. All the funds will go to Techo Para Chile, a Chilean organization constructing temporary homes for those whose homes were destroyed during the earthquake/tsunamis.

They are asking the good people of WNY to help out with this event, which includes musicians, dancing, a 50/50 raffle, and a Chinese Auction.  LACA/El Buen Amigo are looking for: local businesses to donate  goods or services for the Chinese Auction, and musicians, singers, and dancers to perform. You can also take an ad out in the program (full page: $50, half: $30, 1/4 page: $20, a line: $10).

If interested, please contact Santiago Masfarrer at 913-2881 or email lacanewyork {at} yahoo(.)com. Muchas gracias!!

Six Five Days to Extreme Premiere!

Five Days until Extreme Makeover Premiere: Here's YOUR INVITATION!Only six FIVE days until Buffalo gets together to watch the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition TV show that made such a huge impact on our city last November. Details here.

There it goes! We’re EXTREMELY proud of the part we played when we joined the huge volunteer team of contractors, suppliers, businesses and thousands of individual citizens. Our green demolition of the Powell’s old home helped David Homes achieve an Emerald Level LEED certification for the entire project (first ever in NY State!). Here are some of the things we were able to accomplish in our green demo:

  • Did it in only 15 hours
  • Achieved a 97% rate of diversion (by weight). This makes an EXTREME impact on what would usually go the landfill and be “thrown away”
  • Preserved parts of the old house for use in the new house
  • Made wood, interior furnishings, stone and other parts of the old house available for reuse in the new house, throughout the neighborhood and from our store
  • Showed the world the economic viability of green demolition and the future of green jobs in Buffalo

Come to the premiere January 24! Get your free tickets at the Shea’s box office.
