ReUse Rainbarrels are back

You are probably seeing more and more rain barrels popping up in gardens, driveways, and backyards — if you haven’t found one for yourself yet, look no further.

And if you do not yet know: rain barrels can make a huge impact on our local ecology by conserving rain water, slowing water runoff, and preventing pollution and debris from being carried into our waterways and municipal systems.  Installing a rain barrel allows you to catch clean, untreated water that has fallen from the sky and hold it there until you need it — taking a bit of the burden off your tapwater, and the municipalities that make it.  If everyone in the city did this, think of the difference that could be made!!!

You will most likely see rain barrels all over if you are out and about for Buffalo’s Garden Walk this weekend, so if you get jealous and have the urge to keep up with the Joneses (or just want to water your garden or wash your car), you can get yourself a rainbarrel from our store at 298 Northampton for just $30.

Hello Kenmore!

This upcoming Saturday, the 17th of July,  Kenmore residents are encouraged to drop off reusable materials, such as appliances, windows and doors at a Buffalo ReUse truck situated near the Kenmore municipal building at Delaware Avenue and Delaware Road.  It should also be noted that all donations are tax deductible.

For a list of items that we accept check out the  donate material section of our website.

We are also always continuing  to add to our inventory within our tool lending library, so if you have any tools laying around, bring them on down.

For a list of  tools that we are in need of check out the  donate tool section of our tool library website.

Rather than being thrown out, the items will be taken to either our Buffalo ReUse store on Northampton Street in Buffalo, which resells high quality building materials to home owners at a low cost, or inventoried into our tool library that is located on Eaton Street.

This will be the second of five Saturday drop-offs that have been scheduled in conjunction with the Kenmore Farmers’ Market.  They will be held from 9 a.m. to noon.   Mark your calenders with the remaining three Saturdays.  Aug. 21, Sept. 18 and Oct. 16. Ours is!

By donating your materials or tools to us you are allowing us to move forward with our mission.  The money generated from the store’s sales helps fund some of our other programs, including the community gardens and our deconstruction and salvaging teams.

Can we borrow your tent?

Kevin told everyone to pray for rain so we’d have enough water in the Big Arse RainBarrel to wash cars on Saturday–but now the forecast for Saturday IS RAIN!  drat!
We will have the Open House rain or shine!
If there are any tailgaters or other folks not using their fold-up tents this Saturday, we could really use 3-4. We are expecting a couple hundred folks on Saturday for the Earth Warming Party and need to have a place for the seedling swap, BBQ grill & potluck and a few other things. We’ll make an arcade out of them! If you can lend us your tent, please drop it off on the porch at 158 Eaton or at The ReSource.
We will be very busy this week with Thursday’s Earth Day and Saturday’s Earth Warming preparations so I don’t think we’d be able to go pick it up unless it’s on one of our regular routes.  Thanks!
Update: Our friend Chris Ziolkowski came through with a fine 20′x20′ tent. Thanks, Chris! So did Kathy McNally!

Co-InCharge types needed

There are quite a few BIG DEALIO events in the pipeline for the spring and summer that I could really use a lot of helpers and/or maybe a person who wants to be Co-In-Charge of one or more of them.  Email a reply which let’s me know which one you’d like to help with and we’ll figure out when we can meet and get more details taken care of.  I will need your telephone number too, please.
The events coming up are:
Earth Warming Party/OPEN HOUSE, Saturday April 24th 10am-4pm. See our first one here–LOTS of activities planned for that day.  We need folks to grab a handful of invitational leaflets and pass them out.  We will have volunteers from students at BUFF State for setup/day-of and they’ll be with us until about noon, but then we’ll need folks for the rest of the day.  We need volunteers to help with Garden/Store/Tool Library TOURS, registering people for Tool Library, setting up tables for the other guest nonprofits and service groups, setting up and playing games with the kids, operating the grill, manning seedling swap table, event clean up and more.  Potluck dishes needed too.
Potluck for the May 1st Tree Planting: We plant from 9-3pm and finish with a potluck.  I try not to micromanage potlucks–we are happy with whatever we get, but If folks are willing to bake muffins, cookies, breads it staves off the appetite until the afternoon.  Then, hopefully, we’ll have an assortment of sandwiches or crockpots of goodness or bags of chips or buns&weiners.  I need a Grub Coordinator so I can focus on the trees and people planting.  You’d be in charge of getting tables setup and fielding dishes as they come in, the grill, water coolers, coffee pots, garbage cans etc.  Cooking is a form of volunteering; so feel free to drop off a box of apples or a covered dish.
Waffle Breakfast Plate Fundraiser (for the garden program) Saturday, May 8th: LOTS of planning still needed for this.  We need ingredients for vats of batter, borrowing of waffle irons, we need ironers and servers and folks to collect funds.  I will also be eating worms and if you know other folks with COURAGEOUS palettes–heck, I’ll settle for people who were born without tastebuds–but if I’m the only one eating worms I guess I can stomach it as long as the donations come in!  We’ll need help with publicity and setting up the camp kitchen and tables etc.
Salad Smorgabord & Seedling Swap: May 22nd Essentially, it’s a garden work day with a salad buffet; lettuce optional!  Again, we need a Grub Coordinator–and folks to help setup the buffet table and chairs.  Folks bring whatever kind of salad they would like to share. We will also harvest whatever we can that day and prep salads using whatever might be available!
Pickle Eating Contest: very beginning planning stages–date set for Saturday, July 3rd.  Essentially, there’s about 2hrs worth a pickle shenanigans.  I have a list of short competitions which will make up an intersting platform of events.  It will take longer to plan this than it will to actually do it, but it will be a blast!  I’ve got a call out to gardeners to grow cucumbers and we’ll need to project out harvests and pickling parties and sort cucumbers etc etc.

Please email Caesandra and Rachel at volunteer {at} buffaloreuse(.)org if you can assist with any components of these events.

Two legged table

I recently was able to make this project out of our very own reused materials.  All i needed was a door, spindles, hinges and some screws of course.  I came across this idea online of a two legged table and thought it was a really clever idea.

I decided that this was the perfect way to make a table for our volunteer section without having to take up to much space. You can use any size and kind of door you please but for this one I used one that wasn’t so wide so it wouldn’t be protruding into the ReSource highway.  For those who have been to our store know this area can get a little hectic from time to time.

In short, what I did was attach a piece of wood to our theater to support the back of the table.  You could very much just connect the door to a wall.  I used door hinges to fasten the door to the theater, but you may use anything to support the back part up against the wall.  The only legs are found at the front of the table.  I decided on using spindles to support the front of the table.  Again, many other things could be used in this area of the table.

Since I used hinges on the back part of the table this could very much be a hanging table if I were to remove the legs.  You would just have to have some support coming down to hold it up such as chains on both ends. I have included a similar concept for you to check out

Use your mind, be creative.  I encourage all who are handy to put together some neat ideas that they thought about.  I would like to start to share projects like mine more often to our audience.  I am very interested in seeing what you all have made and used out of  the items you have bought from us.  I am more than happy to blog on here for all to see what we are capable of.  scott {at} buffaloreuse(.)org

Creative Backsplash

New at the store this week you will find these antique fireplace tiles to the left as well as several other styles as seen on our flickr.  Our stock changes often, many items are one-of-akind but we will do our best to post weekly some neat things that have come through our doors.  We cannot hold items! Materials come and go on a daily basis therefore we cannot guarantee that we have a certain item in stock.

The best way to find out what we have exactly is to come and visit us on a regular basis!  Its nice and cozy in the ReSource.  If you haven’t yet, come and meet  Olaf, the ReCat.

These tiles that we just got in are very nice, the picture, as good as it is does not do it justice though.  The reasons why I chose to post about the new tile is two fold; one being the neat ideas I came across online and two, Buffalo ReUse will be hosting a tile workshop on April 11th.  More will follow as the time approaches on that!

A couple weeks ago our tin ceiling workshop was pretty successful and I am excited to prepare my next one on tiling walls.  I am a big preacher on creativity can go a far way.  As we demonstrated a couple weeks ago in our workshop, refinished tin looks really nice but a tile backsplash looks just as nice!  You do not need to have the same size tile to make your idea work!

UB’s Alternative Spring Break

Last week we were graced with the energy and good spirits of a group of UB students who were on their “Alternative Spring Break”.

The idea is, instead of partying in Florida or on the Gulf of Mexico, to spend the spring break near home and provide some service to the community. This group helped us in the store and the gardens (gardens are a hive of activity right now – Summer’s coming). This same group also helped out at Habitat for Humanity, the City Mission and Viva la Casa.

We love it when UB students, staff and faculty come by and help us out. Thanks again!

Spring Cleaning

Over the next few weeks leading into spring you will be noticing some changes around the store.  Some minor, some major.  When people hear the word change, they tend to get timid, and say no we can’t.  I say yes we can.

That being said we will be rearranging some things throughout the ReSOURCE as well as making it simpler to navigate throughout and find what you are looking for, and even perhaps something you just cannot resist.  Here are two concepts that I have been working on and am more than willing to continue to work on with your opinions in mind.

I will be posting a concept for our theater over the weekend!  I am excited to share what we have come up with to serve our public better.
